    Registration and breakfast will begin at 7:30. The conference will kick off with keynote speaker Vu Le at 9:15, followed by 3 sets of workshops, lunch, celebrating PANO’s Standards for Excellence Accredited organizations, multiple opportunities to network with exhibitors, a networking reception at 5:00, and end with CAAP's Self Sufficiency Awards from 6:15 - 7:30.

    Every person has a unique brain with strengths to contribute to an inclusive environment. This is an interactive learning experience focusing on leadership skills that promote inclusion and diversity through communication, emotional safety, and positive behavior. The information includes the benefits of creating an emotionally safe, differentiated environment according to the 4BELS (The Four Brain Essential Learning Steps) process. This session familiarizes participants with brain research that emphasizes how to understand and respect a person’s strengths and differences in a diverse society and world. No prior 4BELS knowledge necessary.

    Imagine a single mother who has fallen behind on her bills and finds her small family in crisis on multiple fronts as a result: health, transportation, food insecurity, etc. She travels to multiple nonprofits in between shifts at her part time job(s). At each one she fills out essentially the same paperwork over and over again for hours, often to find out, she only qualifies for three out of the five programs, and the other two efforts were a complete waste of her limited time. With Empower Lancaster (powered by CaseWorthy), Lancaster County partner organizations can help that single mother, and everyone like her, get the resources she needs in the most efficient and effective way possible.   By having many social service providers in the County share a customizable, common, web-based database with a universal intake/assessment feature: • Customers will only have to provide intake information once for multiple providers, learning at that time the programs for which their household qualifies, the distance from their address, and the option to do an instant referral • Providers will be able to create individualized goal plans and track progress for customers • Funders will know how best to invest their resources to scale up successful interventions or fill gaps.   In this model, customers needs are at the center, and providers are coordinating to foster greater progress for and accountability to individuals we serve.

    With the passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act has come increased emphasis on outreach and service to those with significant barriers to employment. While the mission of the public workforce system is to assist all job-seekers in reality, many come to the PA CareerLink sites in no position to effectively engage in a job search. They face considerable life struggles ranging from homelessness and mental health challenges to substance abuse and these must be addressed before they are ready to begin actively seeking employment. Together, the statewide career link centers and the community action agencies are working to take a more comprehensive and collaborative one-stop shop approach to identify and address the needs of the residents they serve. The Southern Alleghenies PA CareerLink sites, together with the Center for Community Action and Tableland have worked together through Board committees and community engagement to address the needs of special populations by re-vamping their service delivery strategies and creating a First Step, Stabilization Stage to address special needs and identify barriers. This is just one example of efforts across the commonwealth to enhance service provision and understand diverse and special population needs. These efforts, as a required partner and Community Services Block Grant financial contributor to the CareerLinks will become part of the fabric of the public workforce system in a much more formalized way than in previous years.

    Is your board clear on the recruitment process for new members? Who on the board is responsible for ensuring a strong recruitment process? Is there a clear picture of who is needed on the board to accomplish the strategic plan and achieve mission? What can you do to ensure you have people on the board that represent (as best as possible) the people that you serve? This program explores all these questions and more in the board recruitment process. We will share tools and resources that can assist in strengthening your board recruitment process which can lead to a stronger board and a stronger organization. We invite you to bring whatever tools you have in place as this program will be interactive with peer to peer sharing.

    Of the top concerns reported in Union-Snyder Community Action Agency’s (CAA) most recent Community Needs Assessment, 'drug and/or alcohol abuse' was ranked #1 for both Union and Snyder Counties. In 2017, data from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/csr911/">Central Susquehanna Regional 9-1-1</a> shows that Snyder County 9-1-1 received 75 overdose-related calls and Union County 9-1-1 received 164 overdose-related calls. Union-Snyder CAA’s Union County Resource Center partner agency, <a href="http://www.gaudenzia.org/">Gaudenzia</a>, has experienced such a high number of outpatient referrals last year that they've added an additional on-site counselor to meet the need. We can no longer ignore the statistics: substance use disorder is here and we must take action to support our community members and loved ones into recovery. Come listen to this powerful panel discussion on substance use disorder and its effects on the family. Attendees will hear personal accounts from the panelists, and learn how to better support individuals who live with addiction and their families.

    If there is one thing we all have in common, it’s money. The need to understand how to earn, use, grow, and protect money is essential for stable families, health, and communities. This session introduces PHFA’s flagship financial education program, Building Your Financial House, uniquely designed to foster personal development, maximize earnings, spend sensibly, manage cash effectively, save and grow for the future, manage financial risks, and borrow only to improve financial position. Building Your Financial House has been tested in a variety of services and programs, including self-sufficiency, transitioning from homelessness, re-entry from incarceration, post-release supervision, veteran’s services, and employee financial wellness.

    We know that inclusive organizations achieve better outcomes. Diversity and inclusion is now a business imperative. As a sector, we discuss embracing diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) as organizational values. Yet, we haven’t moved the needle on real change in the nonprofit world. This session seeks to reframe the conversation. What if we were required to be personally accountable for changing the conversation? How can we embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion by taking steps to hear the stories of others? What assumptions, values, and experiences make up the mosaic of our experiences? How can we intentionally redesign our future experiences? In this session, participants will engage in a diversity activity that explores how race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability and religion played a role in socialization and impacted our interactions with others. What makes this experiential activity so powerful is that participants learn from their own lives and experiences, not hypothetical case studies. The debriefing discussion helps participants to intentionally create more inclusive and diverse zones of familiarity, comfort and trust. This session is designed to be a “learning lab” for taking personal responsibility for furthering diversity, equity and inclusion.

    This workshop is designed to help participants identify the resources within their reach and creatively put together a plan of action in which they can successfully achieve an outcome or goal, measure it, sustain it and diversify it. The theme focuses heavily on community, highlighting the Reading Terminal Market Ambassador Program, but the structure can be easily applied to other themes and the example used can be applied to most community driven collaborations, partners (existing or new) or initiatives.

    Middle leaders in every organization are the "includers" and integraters of system knowledge and people. Middles work with top leaders, front-line staff, peers, customers, and the community. Middles have exceptional understanding of an organization but often feel torn in many directions and wondering what to do. This experiential session reveals 5 key strategies for using the middle space to engage and involve others in order to produce better outcomes and partnerships within the organization and for the community they serve.

    Two years ago, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) embarked on a journey to become an anti-racist organization, focused on embracing institutional practices that reduce disparities and promote racial equity. Much learning has occurred in developing a racial justice and leadership framework that supports this goal. Many are familiar with organizational inclusivity and diversity, but what does it mean to become an anti-racist organization? Presenters will share a road map of the racial equity work that NRCDV is engaged in, hoping that it will be helpful to those starting or already on this journey. Knowing that everyone has something valuable to contribute to this process, participants will be encouraged to build on personal and organizational assets to advance racial equity work in a meaningful and sustainable way.

    When Cultures Meet is a blend of dynamic, visceral exercises involving merging cultures, thought-provoking strategic frameworks, facilitated processes, and application activities. Cultures merge every day in a variety of settings, it could include two units, or leadership and staff, or staff and clients, or through the different cultures we bring because of our gender, race, religious/non-religious, ethnic backgrounds. The workshop opens with an invitation for each participant to share an aspect of her/his/their culture. Next, participants will be taken away from the cultures they are in now to create new cultures to live in. The experiential exercise focuses on two cultures, one dominant with its traditional ways of working faces the challenge of incorporating people with different traditions. The learning continues with a debrief of the exercise, review and reflection, and concludes with a conversation about applying the learning - how is life "in here" like life "out there."

    As we all know, nonprofit staff are expected to wear a lot of hats. One staff member might act as the CFO, volunteer coordinator, HR manager, and development officer – all at once! Adding a marketing hat may feel daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. If you have nonprofit status, a computer with internet access, a basic printer, organizational programming and mission, and an audience, then you already have everything you need to become a successful Accidental Marketer!   In this workshop, you will learn about: -how to use various tools to advance your mission, increase your brand awareness, and engage with your audience - the accidental marketer basics including brand consistency, typography, color codes -a plethora of free and low-cost tools that not only allow for speedy and affordable marketing but also for effective and engaging marketing   Inclusivity and wearing multiple hats go hand-in-hand. By embracing tools that are easy to use for people of all skill levels and backgrounds, nonprofits can feel empowered to invite a wider scope of individuals to bring their skills and experiences to our organizations. Stakeholders look to websites, social media, and print material to verify the legitimacy of an organization. There is no longer an excuse for your organization to sit on the side lines while other nonprofits speed by with great marketing. Attend this session to have some fun!

    Many nonprofits have passionate boards that look nothing like the traditional “big bucks” boards upon which much fundraising theory is based. Nonprofit Hero is a practical, easy, five step method that teaches board members (and staff!) to ask authentically, comfortably and successfully. It shifts the old paradigm, beginning with thanking, rather than asking and turning asking fears into solicitation strengths. Its five steps ensure your solicitors always know exactly where they are in the asking process, and what to do next. Far from being “yucky,” Jones’s approach shows how fundraising calls forth the best in us, attributes like gratitude, curiosity, creativity and leadership. Any Nonprofit Hero fundraiser, no matter what their background, can learn to excel at one step in the asking process. This session will prepare askers to show up ready for “yes” rather than braced for a “no.” The talk includes more than 10 things your board can do, right now, for free, to raise more money. If your board has more passion than wealth, this session is for you.

    While organizational bylaws may dictate terms and the operational structure comprising the relationship between the board chair and the chief executive, the relationship between these two individuals can make or break the success of the relationship between the board and their executive, which in turn can impact that success of the organization. Led by PANO’s board chair and executive director, this workshop will begin by gathering the wisdom in the room about what builds trust and other elements critical to successful communication. Talking authentically about their own experiences, these facilitators will cover basic roles and responsibilities and how to ensure clear alignment within the board structure. They will also discuss how to manage fuzzier issues like boundaries, multiple hats and how to continue engaging when disagreement shows up. Participants will have time to ask questions and to share their own learning.

    Museums and libraries are working in their communities to find new partners to attract new audiences and make their operations more accessible to their local and regional communities.  The right collaboration can sustain operations, elevate visibility and build stronger relationships with partners. Community engagement is critical to making our institutions recognizable as places where community needs are being met.   The Erie Maritime Museum, the PA Military Museum, and the Ephrata Public Library will present key examples of sustainability efforts, strong community partnerships, and their increased community visibility as a place for social, educational and recreational needs of their patrons/visitors.  For example, the Ephrata Public Library has adopted a Collective Impact model to partner with a host of health & human service organizations in the areas of civic engagement, health and financial literacy, and social service to expand upon their mission and strengthen relationships with partners and investors. The Erie Maritime Museum is welcoming newly naturalized citizens to visit:  our history is now your history.   In this era of tight resources, no nonprofit needs to be working on their own.  Join us to discuss some ideas on how to fulfill your mission, make great friends, and bring in a more diverse audience to your nonprofit!

    Avoid common relationship mistakes and behavior patterns that frequently trip up nonprofit organizations (large and small) and that drain organizational resources.     Trauma is pervasive in our society. Nobody is immune. Marginalized communities are at greater risk and often have experienced repeated, chronic or multiple traumas. Trauma, especially in childhood, has lifelong consequences, impacting individuals’ development, health and well-being leading to physical, mental and social problems, including substance abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and violence. Trauma can significantly shape how an individual engages with the world, directly and indirectly affecting their communities. Entire communities can be collectively traumatized by factors such as chronic poverty, violence, or discrimination leading to cycles of broken social networks and relationships. Trauma-informed communities build on the strength, resilience and collective wisdom of all individuals and have the tools to successfully navigate cultural differences with respect, which ultimately leads to healing and empowerment. Such communities understand the importance of considering trauma and culture in all decisions while doing no further harm. Nonprofits are Community Benefit Organizations committed to making a positive, powerful impact on those whom we serve. Nonprofits have an opportunity to build trauma-informed communities by implementing these approaches within our own organizations. By engaging people, building caring connections and promoting safety, we can establish empowered, healthy and vibrant communities.

    The silo mentality brings communication to a standstill. It also limits the definition of team to a department or location. How do we make these destructive organizational barriers disappear? Manifesting a change of this nature may seem daunting especially since silos are often deeply ingrained in the culture. In this session, we will walk you through 7 steps to break down these silos while obtaining buy-in and strengthening the organization overall. This learning experience will be interactive allowing you to see our approach through our eyes using a case study.

    Just as nonprofits focus on diversity and inclusion as they serve clients, hire and train staff, and design programs, nonprofits need to consider diversity and inclusion regarding fundraising. This includes a focus on: what we mean by donors from diverse backgrounds, what motivates donors from diverse backgrounds to give, and how the nonprofit can best interface with prospective donors and donors from an array of groups. As well, nonprofits need to consider recruitment and training of staff and volunteers as it relates to this topic. This session will provide nonprofits with lessons learned from the literature that can help enhance their work around diversity and inclusion in fundraising.

    Strengths-based leaders need strong communication skills in order to build mutually respectful relationships with staff leading to a more inclusive and empowering workplace. Strengths-based communication skills help leaders facilitate discussions when perspectives vary. Oftentimes when faced with staff complaints, leaders are unsure how to respond productively. In this engaging workshop, we will discuss and practice strategies for responding to complaints in a way that supports dialogue and examination of underlying values and commitments.

    Participants will learn about a community based response model to bias incidents created by Community Responders Network (CRN) in 2008 for the Greater Harrisburg area. Presenters will highlight the role of local and national non-profit organizations in supporting community efforts to end violence, collective trauma, and foster healthy, diverse communities. Have you wondered what a community-driven response to hate and prejudice could look like? Workshop attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the work of the CRN and see a live demonstration of one of its impactful community dialogues. The workshop will provide tools to leverage existing resources in attendees’ communities to address unique issues.

    True or false: It’s against the law for nonprofits to advocate.  FALSE!  While it’s true that nonprofits cannot lobby for or against specific candidates, we can – and should! – be involved in advocacy efforts around laws, policies, or other legislative actions that may impact their mission and their work.  Knowing that we CAN advocate is half the battle.  But what’s the most effective way for nonprofits to bring about positive policy impact? What strategies being used by and for PA nonprofits?  How do we engage in this work without compromising your core values?  Join four PA-based nonprofit leaders on the ground doing the challenging and rewarding work of advocacy day in and day out for a dynamic conversation exploring these questions and more.

    Of course, by difficult client, what we really mean is that we, the case workers, are having difficulty working with the client. Difficult clients are those who make us feel frustrated, uncomfortable, or ineffective. Clients who come through our agency’s door could be suffering from a variety of issues, including mental health or substance abuse, or they could simply be having a very bad day. Knowing how to identify and deescalate a client’s issues effectively will improve your ability to better serve our low-income families. In this workshop, three highly trained professionals will share their expertise on how to better work with clients who need our help but are having trouble expressing themselves effectively.
